LAKEWOOD, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's rowing team placed second to NCAA Division I University of Portland in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight races and won the varsity four event to open its season Saturday at the Daffodil Sprints held on American Lake.

"I thought they did pretty well for our first competition," said WWU head coach John Fuchs (16th year). "The weather was a problem. It was just a downpour the whole time and the wind was marginal. They all came in with three inches of water in the boat, but we got some racing in, which was good."

"I liked the fact that they stuck to the race plan. They focused on what they needed to do for the rest of the season and not too much on the competition. That's definitely a positive, so I was very happy with that."

The Vikings' eight completed the 2,000-meter course in 8:17.7, less than two seconds behind the Pilots (8:16.1) with Seattle University third (8:25.3).

Seated in the Vikings' boat were coxswain Maeghan Callegari (Jr., Kirkland/Lake Washington), stroke Catrina Cuadra (Sr., Lake Stevens), No.7 Regan Wessman (Sr., Kirkland/Lake Washington), No.6 Lauren Ramstead (So., Everson/Nooksack Valley), No.5 Megan Marler (So., Morrison, CO/D'Evelyn), No.4 Olivia Rowland (Sr., Seattle/Holy Names), No.3 Christine Henie (Sr., Chugiak, AK), No.2 Emily Bartlett (Fr., Broadlands, VA/Thomas Jefferson S&T), and bow Emily Little (So., Port Angeles/Peninsula CC).

Portland dominated the junior varsity eight race with a winning time of 8:28.7. WWU was second among five boats in 8:42.7.

WWU's varsity four won by nearly two boat lengths over Portland with a time of 8:37.3. The Pilots were clocked in 8:43.0. In all, there were six entries.

Making up the Vikings' winning four shell were coxswain Kate Nelson (Jr.., Moscow, ID), stroke Audra Massey (Jr., Albuquerque, NM), No.3 Sara Crowell (Jr., Bainbridge Island/Bainbridge), No.2 Alyson Morris (Sr., Tumwater), and bow Becky Newby (Jr., Puyallup/Emerald Ridge).

The Vikings' other entry, the junior varsity four (9:03.6) finished a close second to host University of Puget Sound (9:00.2) in a seven-boat race.

WWU next competes at the Husky Open on Saturday, Apr. 5.
