Western has solid showing at NCRC Invitational
April 4, 2009
VANCOUVER, Wash. - Facing the biggest regular-season challenge by its peers since beginning a string of four straight NCAA Division II national championships in 2005, the Western Washington University women's varsity eight rose to the occasion Saturday at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Invitational Regatta held on Vancouver Lake. The Vikings, rated No.1 in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA II Poll, dominated the DII women's eight race that included two out- of-region national rivals, Dowling NY and Rollins FL, winning by more than two boat lengths. Western toured the 2,000-meter course in 7:13.80, followed by Dowling (7:24.06), Seattle Pacific (7:28.14), Humboldt State (7:35.24), Rollins FL (7:37.23) and UC San Diego (7:54.86). It marked the first time during any regular season that the Vikings faced NCAA II competition from outside the West Region. Later that day, that same Viking shell won the women's open eight with a 7:10.70 clocking, a little over three seconds ahead of Dowling (7:13.75), with Orange Coast a distant third (7:32.47) in the six-boat race. "The first race they were rowing in really good conditions, but in the second one it got really rough," said Western coach John Fuchs. "Dowling put up a great fight in the second one." Seated in Western's double-win varsity shell were coxswain Kristy Theodorson (Sr., Bothell/Inglemoor), stroke Casey Mapes (So., Anchorage, AK/Service), No.7 Carson MacPherson-Krutsky (Fr., Seattle/Garfield), No.6 Jean Piette (Fr., Vancouver/Columbia River), No.5 Megan Northey (Fr., Brier/King's), No.4 Katie Woolsey (Fr., North Bend/Mount Si), No.3 Heather Kelly (Jr., Bird Creek, AK/South Anchorage), No.2 Madeleine Eckmann (Jr., Winthrop/Liberty Bell) and bow Audrey Coon (Sr., Kenai, AK/Kenai Central). But while the varsity eight was enjoying success, the Western women's varsity four placed second in each of its three races. The Vikings lost to Humboldt State by nearly seven seconds in the DII varsity four race, and were beaten twice by host Lewis & Clark OR in the open four heat and final runs, each time by five seconds. That marked the first time since the 2004 national championships that a Western varsity shell had lost to anyone other than a Division I school in four or eight competition. "They struggled a little bit today," Fuchs said. "Having only three practices this week definitely had an impact on how they handled the racing today. There's definitely some work that has to be done in that area." The Western women's novice four posted two victories, winning by nearly a minute in its heat over runner-up Puget Sound and by over a minute in the final with Oregon second. Seated in that shell were coxswain Alix Crilly (Fr., Wenatchee), stroke Jordan Uecker (Fr., Bellingham/Sehome/Whatcom CC), No.3 Nolan Winger (Fr., Bremerton/Central Kitsap), No.2 Kelsey Baker (Fr., Gig Harbor) and bow Kate Berni (Fr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap). "It was impressive and in really bad conditions," said Fuchs. "They really pulled it together and it was pretty amazing to watch." The Vikings' second women's novice eight won with a time of 7:24.79, placing well ahead of two Humboldt State shells in a five-boat race. The third women's varsity eight finished fourth in the second varsity eight race. The start of the regatta was delayed for two hours because of early-morning fog. "The team really had a good regatta as a whole," Fuchs said. "It's a work in progress, but they're getting there ... All in all it was pretty good racing everywhere." Western next makes its only home appearance of the season at the Viking Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 11 (10 a.m.) at Lake Samish.
