LOWELL, Ore. - Humboldt State University upset top-ranked Western Washington University in the featured varsity eight race to snap the Vikings string of team titles at seven, though the two teams tied in points, Saturday at the 12th annual Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships at Dexter Lake.

The Vikings entered the meet ranked No.1 nationally in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll.

Humboldt State, rated third nationally and second in the West Region behind WWU, won the varsity eight race by two-thirds of a boat length over the Vikings in an event that had seven entries. The Lumberjacks were timed in 7:01.07 over the 2,000-meter course, with WWU clocked in 7:04.26.

"Humboldt State had a great finish," said WWU coach John Fuchs. "They have a really good team this year, they're really deep."

The loss was the first for a WWU varsity eight at the NCRC Championships since 2004 when the Vikings also placed second.

WWU and Humboldt State each finished with 102 points. Puget Sound was a distant third at 38 in the seven-school field.

"I'm not disappointed," Fuchs said. "The girls are, but we learned some things. You put together a race plan and sometimes it doesn't always work and you've got to tweak a few things here and there and go ... It's just impossible to win every race because the competition is getting too tough."

WWU and Humboldt State each won four of the eight women's races. The Vikings captured the varsity four, second varsity eight, novice four and second novice four. Besides the varsity eight, the Lumberjacks took the second varsity four, novice eight, and pair without cox. Either WWU or Humboldt State was second in all but one of those events.

"We raced really well overall," said Fuchs. "We had a lot of first and second place finishes. We learned a lot of things and we're getting there."

WWU's varsity four won by over 13 seconds with the Lumberjacks second. Seated in that shell were coxswain Alix Crilly (Sr., Wenatchee), stroke Jean Piette (Sr., Vancouver/Columbia River), No.3 Megan Northey (Sr., Brier/King's), No.2 Katie Woolsey (Sr., North Bend/Mount Si), and bow Kate Berni (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap).

The Vikings' second varsity eight placed first by nearly a boat length over Humboldt State with respective times of 7:23.0 and 7:27.06. In that boat for WWU were coxswain Emma Heil (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake), stroke Christine Henie (So., Chugiak, AK), No.7 Olivia Rowland (So., Seattle/Holy Names), No.6 Regan Wessman (So., Kirkland/Lake Washington), No.5 Claire Marine (So., Enumclaw), No.4 Cozette Still (So., Lake Forest Park/Blanchet), No.3 Maddy Hillier (Sr., Sedro-Woolley), No.4 No.2 Alyson Morris (So., Littlerock/Tumwater), and bow Sarah Lundli (Jr., Shoreline/Shorewood).

A WWU club team won the men's title with 78 points, Lewis & Clark placing second with 50. The Vikings won the varsity eight, varsity lightweight four and novice eight races, and were second in the varsity four and second varsity four runs.

The WWU women compete in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on Apr. 28-29 at Gold River, Calif. (Lake Natoma). Those races will probably determine the West Region representative at nationals.
