Four WWU shells to compete at Windermere Cup races

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University will race four of its women's shells at the 26th Annual Windermere Cup races on Saturday, May 5, on Lake Washington. The races are held as part of the celebration of Seattle's Opening Day of Boating Season and are followed by the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day Boat Parade. More than 700 rowers compete in this prestigious event. The Vikings' varsity eight will row in the Erickson Cascade Cup race at 11:20 a.m. against host University of Washington's junior varsity, Otago (New Zealand) and Gonzaga. WWU's second varsity eight competes in an open eight race with two Washington boats and two Portland shells at 10:43 a.m. The varsity four races at 10:40 a.m. against two Husky boats, Gonzaga, Victoria and Portland; and the novice eight goes against two Washington shells and Victoria at 11:05 a.m. Admission to the event is free. Viewing is available on the shores of the Montlake Cut, or by boats anchored to a log boom in Lake Washington. The Vikings are No.1 in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll with Humboldt State second. WWU is No.2 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association national rating, trailing the Lumberjacks by just one point, 179 to 178. WWU has won the last seven NCAA II national titles.
