SEATTLE, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's varsity eight had a solid performance against the stiffest competition it will face this season, finishing fourth in the Erickson Cascade Cup event Saturday at the 26th Annual Windermere Cup races.

The Vikings were clocked in 6:55.5, less than two seconds behind third-place Gonzaga (6:53.9). Host Washington's junior varsity won in 6:44.3 with Otago from New Zealand second (6:47.8).

In WWU's varsity eight were coxswain Alix Crilly (Sr., Wenatchee), stroke Jean Piette (Sr., Vancouver/Columbia River), No. 7 Megan Northey (Sr., Brier/King's), No.6 Katie Woolsey (Sr., North Bend/Mount Si), No.5 Kate Berni (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap), No.4 Alyssa Dewey (Sr., Bend/Mountain View), No.3 Stephanie Bluhm (Jr., Auburn/Mountain View), No.2 Kelsey Baker (Sr., Gig Harbor), and bow Carson MacPherson-Krutsky (Sr., Seattle/Garfield).

WWU's junior varsity eight and varsity four both placed fifth and its novice eight finished fourth.

The Vikings are ranked No.2 in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/NCAA Division II national poll, trailing Humboldt State by just one point, 179 to 178.

WWU, which has won the last seven NCAA II national championships, expects to be the West Region representative at nationals on May 25-27 at West Windsor, New Jersey. The announcement will be made May 14.

The Windermere Cup races were attended by thousands of spectators both on land and in boats along the Montlake Cut and Lake Washington. It has been a part of the Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day of Boating Season since 1970. More than 700 rowers competed in the event.
