Two Vikings named CRCA Pocock first-team All-Americans
May 22, 2012
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Two members of the Western Washington University varsity eight shell, stroke Jean Piette (Sr., Vancouver/Columbia River) and team captain and No.7 seat Megan Northey (Sr., Brier/King's), have been named to the 2012 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Pocock All-America women's rowing first team. The duo is expected to play a key role in WWU's bid to win an eighth straight national title this weekend at West Windsor, New Jersey. It is the fourth trip to nationals for both rowers, all of them in the varsity eight. Piette and Northey have each had three gold-medal winning performances in eights competition at Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regattas. "Megan (Northey) went to Ergomania on her own to try and break a 10-year-old school record on the erg and she did just that," said WWU coach John Fuchs (14th year). "She has been a fabulous leader and mentor to our younger rowers." "Jean (Piette) `the Machine' has been stroking our top eight all year. She knows only one gear - full speed. I have rarely seen anyone that puts in as much effort as she does. She does not tolerate losing." Earlier this season, Piette was named a second-team WIRA all-star and Northey was a Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference all-star. Maintaining a 3.92 (4.0 scale) grade point average, Northey earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete and first-team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 NCAA II At-Large honors. She is a three-time NCRC academic all-star. 2012 CRCA Division II Pocock All-America Team First Team
