BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University rower Megan Northey has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America second team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The men's and women's at-large teams were announced Wednesday.

A senior from Brier, who graduated from King's High School, Northey is a kinesiology major maintaining a 3.92 grade point average.

Northey was captain of the WWU rowing squad that placed second in both the team standings and varsity eight competition at the NCAA Division II National Championships in late May.

A Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete and first-team CRCA DII Pocock All-American, Northey was recently named the 2011-12 WWU Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Northey manned the No.7 seat in the eight shell, helping the Vikings to a gold medal winning performance in DII competition for the third time at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta. She was a Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference academic all-star for the third time and received NCRC all-star rowing honors.

During her four-year career, Northey was a part of three WWU national championship teams and rowed in national title-winning eights in 2009 and 2011.

At the 2012 nationals, Northey received the NCAA Elite 89 Award, which goes to the student-athlete with the highest GPA among those competing at the championship. She was the first WWU student-athlete to earn that honor in any sport.
