Western's Oberholzer in June 20 Sports Illustrated
June 14, 2011
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's Samantha Oberholzer will be in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the June 20 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Oberholzer was the coxswain in the Vikings' varsity eight shell that won a national title in helping Western capture a seventh straight team crown at the 2011 NCAA Division II National Women's Rowing Championships on May 27-29 at Sacramento, Calif.
It was the fourth national team title for Oberholzer, a senior from Bellevue who was named a first-team Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-American. She also was a Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association all-star.
Oberholzer, who is graduating this summer with a degree in journalism, was seated in Western's varsity eight as a junior and in the varsity four as a freshman and sophomore.
A graduate of Bellevue High School, Oberholzer guided the Vikings' top boat to wins in seven of nine races this season. The two losses, both by close margins, were to two NCAA I schools, Gonzaga and Washington. Besides its national championship, Western took the team title at the Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships and all four if its entries won grand finals at the WIRA Championship Regatta.
