Nov. 7, 2010
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's rowing team completed the fall portion of its training schedule Sunday morning, competing in the 2010 Head of the Lake Regatta held on the Montlake Cut. The Vikings, who have won the last six NCAA Division II national championships, placed fourth in the varsity eight competition. Their second eight finished third and their third eight crossed the finish line eighth. All the races covered 5,000 meters. "It was fun and a good way to end this portion of our season," said Western coach John Fuchs (13th year). "For us, it wasn't about comparing ourselves with anyone else, but just to get the exercise of some rowing competition." The Vikings' varsity eight was timed in 18:52.28, finishing behind three NCAA I programs in host Washington, Washington State and Gonzaga. Seated in Western's shell were coxswain Samantha Oberholzer (Sr., Bellevue), stroke Jean Piette (Jr., Vancouver/Columbia River), No.7 Siri Carlson (Sr., Tacoma/Franklin Pierce), No.6 Casey Mapes (Sr., Anchorage, AK/Robert Service), No.5 Stephanie Bluhm (So., Auburn), No.4 Megan Northey (Jr., Brier/King's, No.3 Carson MacPherson-Krutsky (Jr., Seattle/Garfield), No.2 Kate Woolsey (Jr., North Bend/Mount Si) and bow Kate Berni (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap).
