GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Western Washington University's Catherine Kim (Sr., Bellevue/Skyline) shot a 6-over par 78 and the nationally ranked Vikings are ninth among 18 teams following first-day action Monday at the Grand Canyon University Women's Golf Invitational Tournament being played at the Palm Valley Golf Club.

The second and final round is Tuesday.

The Vikings, ranked No.18 in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25, had a first-day round of 320.

No.17 St. Edward's TX is the leader at 307, three strokes ahead of No.16 Northern Kentucky and Cal Baptist, who are tied for second at 310. No.12 Northeastern State OK and No.4 Tarleton State TX are tied for fourth at 313.

"We turned a lot of good rounds into 80s today, but so did a lot of other teams," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "There's a real log jam from first through 10th, so if we're able to go out and post a good number early tomorrow morning, there's no telling how far we could move up."

Kim is tied for 17th, seven strokes behind leader Stephanie Bird of Northeastern State. Bird shot a 1-under 71 and is two strokes ahead of Alex Smith from St. Edward's and Amy Dalzell from Saint Martin's, who each shot 73.

Allison Gillette (Sr., Seattle/Ballard) and Kaitlin Parker (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) each shot 80 for the Vikings and are tied for 29th, and Breanna Carmichael (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep).

Western's Lianne Matkin (So., Spokane/Northwest Christian) each shot 82 and are tied for 45th.
