CHICO, Calif. - Kaitlin Parker (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) led a solid team effort with a 5-over par 77, helping the Western Washington University women's golf team to a one-stroke lead after first-day play Monday at the Chico State University Spring Classic being held at the Butte Creek Country Club. The final round takes place Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Vikings, tied for No.16 in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Coaches Top 25, shot 27-over 315. Cal State Monterey Bay is second at 316, with host Chico State third at 319 in the 11-team field. "One thing I liked was that everyone played solid," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "No one really lit it up, but it was nice to see them putting confidently." "We didn't play the last four holes well, and we were a good finish away from a great round." Parker is in a five-way tie for second in medalist play, one stroke behind leader Brittany Carrera from Notre Dame de Namur. Also among the top 10 for Western are Catherine Kim (Sr., Bellevue/Skyline), who is tied for seventh at 78, and Breanna Carmichael (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep), who is tied for 10th at 79. Western's Allison Gillette (Sr., Seattle/Ballard) is tied for 20th at 81 and Christa Goldie (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) is tied for 27th at 83. |
