Western finishes tied For 10th at Gonzaga Tourney

SPOKANE, Wash. --- Western Washington University finished in a tie for 10th ninth among 13 teams in the Gonzaga University MDA Women's Golf Invitational which completed play Tuesday at the Hangman Valley Golf Course.
The Vikings, ranked No.14 in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Preseason Poll, were one of just two non-NCAA I schools in the tournament. They posted a final-round score of 320 for a 72-hole total of 953, ending up in a tie with British Columbia and South Dakota State.
Leanne Matkin (So., Spokae/Northwest Christian) was Western's top individual, placing in a tie for 34th after at 19-over-par 237 after a final-round 83.
Eastern Washington claimed the team championship with a 37-over par 901, five shots ahead of second-place Wyoming (301=906). The Eagles had the best final-round score with a 301. Cal Poly was third (309=914), with UC Riverside fourth (309=916).
Jennifer Bermingham of UC Riverside claimed medalist honors with a 1-over 217 after shooting a final-round 74.
Western's Christa Goldie (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak), playing in her first collegiate tournament, was tied for 41st (79=238). Breanna Carmichael (So., Spokane/Northwest Christian) was tied for 46th (82=239); Catherine Kim (Sr., Bellevue/Skyline), who had Western's best final round with a 77, was tied for 51st (240), and Allison Gillette (Sr., Seattle/Ballard) was 75th (82=251).
Western next competes in the Saint Martin's Invitational on Oct. 4-5 at the Olympia Golf and Country Club.
