Phoenix, Arizona - Paced by two newcomers, Western Washington University is tied for third among 16 teams after first-day play Monday at the Grand Canyon University Women's Golf Fall Invitational being held at the Coldwater Golf and Country Club.

The second and final round takes place Tuesday (7 a.m.).

Monday's round was the first competitive one of the season for the Vikings, ranked No.16 in the Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll, who shot 8-over par 296.

Northern Arizona, a Division I school, leads at 3-under 285 with host Grand Canyon second at 293. Tied for third with Western is Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal Baptist and Sonoma State are tied for fifth at 298.

"I was very pleased with our play today," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "It was the first round of competition we've had. We have a little bit of work to do tomorrow, but with the way the course sets up I like how things are shaping up."

The Vikings were led by freshman Claire Rachor (Bellingham), who shot an even par 72 and is tied for seventh in medalist play. Katie Sharpe (Jr., Bellingham/Santa Clara), a transfer from NCAA I Santa Clara, shot 2-over 74 and is tied for 17th.

Western's Brittany Wilcox (So., Spokane/Mead) and Sophie Elstrott (So., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) are tied for 24th, each shooting 75.

Rounding out the Vikings' squad was Christa Goldie (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak), who is tied for 45th after carding a 78.

Tied for the medalist lead are Northern Arizona's Alexa Kim and Grand Canyon's Jennifer Lutz GCU, who each fired 3-under 69s.
