Western ties for fourth at Grand Canyon Fall Invitational

GOODYEAR, Arizona - Western Washington University tied for fourth place among 17 teams, just two strokes out of second, at the Grand Canyon University Women's Golf Fall Invitational which ended Tuesday at the Coldwater Golf and Country Club. The Vikings shot a final-round 300 for a 36-hole score of 596 to tie with Sonoma State (298). NCAA Division I Northern Arizona, which shot 3-under 285 on Monday, won by 14 strokes at 580 (295). Tying for second place at 594 were Cal Baptist (296) and Cal State Monterey Bay (298). "I thought we played pretty good," said Western coach Bo Stephan, "but we let a few shots slip away. Overall, it was a very successful first tournament with a lot of things to build on." The Vikings were paced by freshman Claire Rachor (Bellingham), who made a solid collegiate debut by placing 11th in medalist play at 147 (75). Teammate Brittany Wilcox (So., Spokane/Mead) tied for 13th at 148, leading the team Tuesday with a 1-over 73. Western's Katie Sharpe (Jr., Bellingham/Santa Clara), a transfer from NCAA I Santa Clara, tied for 23rd at 151 (77). Christa Goldie (Jr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 31st at 153 (75) and Sophie Elstrott (So., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) tied for 46th at 156 (81). Northern Arizona's Stephanie Kim took medalist honors at 2-under 142 (71). Three players tied for second at 143. The Vikings, who were tied for third after Monday's opening round, next host their own WWU Invitational on Oct. 12-13 at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. |
