BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Catherine Kim (Sr., Bellevue/Skyline) shot a 1-over par 74 and tied for third place in medalist play, helping Western Washington University to a sixth straight title at the 14th WWU Women's Golf Invitational Tournament, which ended Tuesday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
It was the second consecutive victory overall for the Vikings, ranked No.16 in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll. Last week, they rallied from a 14-shot deficit to win the Saint Martin's Invitational.
Western shot a final-round 312 for a 36-hole total of 42-over 626. That was eight strokes better than Saint Martin's, which finished at 634 after shooting a tourney-best round of 309.
"Everybody from one to eight, including the individuals, represented us well," said Western coach Bo Stephan. "I still think there is room for improvement, but all in all they're playing very well right now."
Four strokes separated the next three schools in the seven-team field. Cal State Monterey Bay was third (321=646), Hawaii Hilo fourth (316=648) and Grand Canyon fifth (324=650).
Kim, who was the medalist last year, tied with teammate Lianne Matkin (So., Spokane/Northwest Christian), who was playing as an individual, at 6-over 152. Matkin shot 75 on Tuesday.
Western's Allison Gillette (Sr., Seattle/Ballard) tied for sixth at 158 (77), and Breanna Carmichael (So., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) (81) and Kaitlin Parker (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) (80) tied for eighth at 159.
The Vikings' Christa Goldie (Fr., Mukilteo/Kamiak) tied for 11th at 160 (81) and Jennifer Noland (Sr., Kennewick/Southridge), playing as an individual, tied for 18th at 164 (84). Ashley Williams (Sr., Camas) finished 36th at 176 (89).
Grand Canyon's Jessica McKay took medalist honors at 1-over 147 (74), four shots better than Saint Martin's Babe Prante (74=151).
It was the ninth title overall for Western at its tourney.
The Vikings next compete in the Sonoma State Invitational on Oct. 22-23 at Santa Rose, Calif.
