Vikings in 8th at Sonoma State Invite

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -  The Western Washington University women's golf team is in 8th place after the first round of the Sonoma State Fall Invitational played Monday at the Foxtail Golf Club North Course.

The Vikings stand at 39-over-par after shooting a team score of 327 Monday. Arkansas Tech (+8, 296) and Chico State (+9, 297) hold the top two spots in the nine-team tournament leading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.

Western sophomore Stephanie Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) and senior Brooke Branigan (Bellingham, WA) are tied for 26th place after firing 8-over-par rounds of 80 in the first round.

"We can come back a lot with a good round tomorrow," said head coach Bo Stephan. "We had some player that were really close to playing well today, but obviously our score does not show that. We came back with a nice final round in our last tournament and will aim to do that again tomorrow."

Arkansas Tech's Avery Struck shot a 2-under-par 70 to hold the individual lead in the 53-player field. .

The 36-hole tournament concludes Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8 am.
