SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Western Washington University's Kristen Hansen (So., Spokane/Mead) is in a three-way tie for third place, three shots off the lead, and the Vikings are in a two-way tie for fifth in a 13-team field after Monday's round at the Sonoma State University Women's Golf Fall Invitational being played at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
The second and final round takes place Tuesday.
Hansen shot a 1-over par 73. She trails only leader Ya-Ting Yank from Cal Baptist, who fired a 2-under 70, and Sonoma State's Haley Whitback, who is second after shooting 71. Chico State's Sarah Macomish and Cal Baptist's Marvic Monsalve also carded 73s.
WWU is tied with Chico State for fifth at 312. Cal Baptist, ranked No.14 nationally, holds a five-stroke lead at 297 over second-place Sonoma State (302). Tied for third at 311 are British Columbia and Academy of Art.
"It's a tough golf course, but overall I thought we played well," said WWU coach Bo Stephan (7th year). "Hansen was outdriving everyone in her threesome and probably hit all but three greens in regulation."
Hansen entered with top 10 finishes in all three of her tournaments this season, placing third at the Western New Mexico Invitational, fifth at the WWU Invitational and tying for ninth at the Saint Martin's Invitational.
The Vikings' Anna Bourland (Jr., Bainbridge) is tied for 16th (77), Audrey Orem (Fr., Bellingham) is tied for 23rd (79) and Brooke Branigan (Fr., Bellingham) and Emily Koryto (So., East Lansing, MI) are each tied for 47th (83).
