WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Western Washington University women’s golf team closed out its fall season with a third-place finish at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate held Monday and Tuesday at the Waikoloa Beach Resort King’s Course.
The Vikings battled windy conditions in Tuesday’s final round to record a 47-over-par 335, 28 shots behind the back-to-back rounds of 307 from the first two rounds played Monday on the Big Island. WWU finished the 54-hole tournament at 85 over par (949), 23 shots back of second place Stetson and 33 shots back of tournament winner Academy of Art.
“We just didn’t handle the winds very well today and that showed on the scorecards,” said head coach Bo Stephan. “It wasn’t the way we wanted to finish the fall season, but we’ll chalk it up as a learning experience, get some rest and work on the things we learned from the fall. It was a demanding end to the season for the team and I am proud of how they handled it.”
Senior Brooke Branigan (Bellingham, WA) and sophomore Stephanie Sewell (Kent, WA/Kentridge) were the highest placing WWU players in the 31-player tournament tying for 11th place at +20 (236). Branigan shot a final-round 82 (+10) with Sewell turning in a 86 (+14).
Academy of Art won the 6-team tournament with a three-round score of 52-over-par 916, also recording the lowest score of the final round (313). All five of the Academy of Art players finished in the top 7 in the tournament.
Paige Kemp of Stetson took home individual medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 10-over-par 226.
The Vikings are scheduled to open the spring season in early February at the Point Loma Tournament at the Riverwalk Golf Club. The full spring schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
