Western fifth following first-day play at Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational

MONTEREY BAY, Calif. - Western Washington University's Claire Rachor (Fr., Bellingham) and Alexandria Taylor (So., Sammamish/Eastlake) are among eight players tied for 10th in medalist play, and the Vikings are fifth, 16 strokes behind the leader, in the team standings following Monday's round at the Cal State Monterey Bay Lady Otter Women's Golf Invitational Tournament being played at the Bayonet Golf and Country Club. The second and final round takes place Tuesday. Western shot an opening-round 323. California Baptist tops the 13-team field at 307, followed by host CSUMB 313, British Columbia 319 and Grand Canyon 320. Rachor and Taylor each shot 7-over par 80 to pace the Vikings. Breanna Carmichael (Sr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) is tied for 18th (81), Katie Sharpe (Jr., Bellingham) is tied for 26th (82) and Sophie Elstrott (So., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) is tied for 39th (84). Leading in medalist play at 1-under 72 is Nathalie Silva from California Baptist with teammate Adriana Niclotti second at 1-over 74. Western has won its last two tourneys with Rachor taking medalist honors at the Sonoma State Invitational and placing second at the WWU tournament. The Vikings rallied from a 21-stroke deficit to take the Sonoma State title. This is the final fall competition for Western. |
