April 27, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University women's golf team is making a seventh straight trip to the NCAA Division II West Super Regional to be held on May 4-6 at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Omaha, Neb. (host University of Nebraska at Omaha). That announcement was made today by the NCAA II Women's Golf Committee. The Vikings are the No.3-seed among nine teams selected to compete in the West Super Regional. Last year, they placed second and went on to finish sixth at the national tournament. The 54-hole event is one of four super regionals being held across the country. The top three schools and top three individuals from non-qualifying schools in each super regional advance to the national tournament on May 13-16 at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. The No.1 seed in the West Super Regional is St. Edward's TX followed by No.2 Tarleton State TX, No.3 WWU, No.4 Cal State Monterey Bay, No.5 Sonoma State, No.6 West Texas A&M, No.7 Central Oklahoma, No.8 Chico State and No.9 Nebraska-Omaha. Tarleton State has won the last two regional titles. The Vikings are No.18 in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA II Top 25. Tarleton State is No.7, with St. Edward's No.9, Cal State Monterey Bay No.10, Sonoma State No.14, Nebraska-Omaha No.16, Central Oklahoma No.19 and Chico State No.21 "I'm pleasantly surprised," said fourth-year Western head coach Bo Stephan of the No.3 seed. "That will put us in the same pairings with the top two seeds, which will be good as you always want to play against the best, and we'll get the desirable tee times." "It's a good field with at least six schools having a realistic chance of advancing. Our approach all along has been to play our best golf at the end of the season, and if we continue to do that we should be in good shape." The Vikings tied for the regional title in 2005 and finished second in 2004, 2006 and 2008, making trips to nationals each time. In 2007, they placed fourth and did not qualify for nationals. Kaitlin Parker (Sr., Burlington/Marysville-Pilchuck) leads the Vikings with a 77.6 scoring average. She has had five top three finishes in eight regular-season tournaments, taking medalist honors twice and placing second twice. Also among Western's five top five are Breanna Carmichael (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) (81.6), who is playing in her third regional, and Lianne Matkin (Jr., Spokane/Northwest Christian) (82.4), who is making her second appearance. Parker and Carmichael both earned regional all-star honors last season as they tied for fifth place at regionals. Carmichael also led the Vikings in 2007, finishing 10th. It is the first trip to regionals for both Sophie Elstrott (Fr., Eugene, OR/South Eugene) (79.1), who placed second individually in one tournament and third in another, and Christa Goldie (So., Mukilteo/Kamiak) (79.5), who had three runner-up finishes in medalist play. Western finished among the top two in five of eight regular-season tournaments, winning three times and placing second twice.
