MANSFIELD, Texas - Two holes made all the difference for Western Washington University women's golfer Kristen Hansen in her quest for an outstanding start in opening-round action Monday at the NCAA Division II West Super Regional being held at the Walnut Creek Country Club.
Hansen, a sophomore from Spokane (graduate of Mead High School), shot a 10-over par 82 and is in a three-way tie for 28th in a field of 48. That included a seven on the par 4 eighth hole and a 10 on the par 4 11th.
"She played a good round, but just had two big numbers which is not characteristic of her," said WWU head coach Bo Stephan. "But by no means is she out of it. If she can play well the next couple of days, which is definitely within her capabilities, she can get right back into it."
Hansen is one of four individuals playing in the 54-hole tournament which runs through Wednesday. The top three teams and the top three individuals not with an advancing team qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 14-17 at Conover, N.C.
The first-day medalist was Hee-Leina Kim from Colorado State-Pueblo, who shot a 1-under 71and leads by three strokes.
Host St. Edward's tops the team standings at 306, followed by Tarleton State (310) and California Baptist (314).
Hansen was the 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, helping the Vikings to their third straight conference title. She led the GNAC with a 77.5 scoring average, finishing among the top 10 in six of nine tournaments.
