FINDLAY, Ohio - Western Washington University's Kaitlin Parker (Sr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck) is in a three-way tie for ninth place following first-day action Wednesday at the NCAA Division II National Women's Golf Championships being played at the 6,219-yard Findlay Country Club.

Parker shot a 4-over par 76 to open the four-day, 72-hole tournament. She played the front nine in even par with one birdie and one bogey, but had four bogeys on the back nine.

"She was rock solid on the front nine, "said Western coach Bo Stephan, "hitting a lot of fairways and greens. On the back nine, she hit into the rough a couple of times and the rough here is brutal."

Parker is six shots behind the co-leaders - Tarleton State's Carla Cooper and Pfeiffer's Charlene Reid, who each shot 2-under 70.

Tarleton State (301) holds a six-shot lead in the team standings over second-place Indianapolis (307).

Parker tied for fifth place last week in medalist play at the NCAA II West Super Regional, the Vikings also placing fifth as a team.

During the regular season, Parker averaged 77.6 strokes per round, placing among the top three in five tournaments with two firsts, two seconds and one third.

Last year, Parker was a National Golf Coaches Association West Region all-star and tied for 29th at nationals.

Prior to transferring to Western, Parker attended Skagit Valley CC.
