PERSONAL: Major is education ... Her father, David, played basketball at University of Calgary. By T.J. Cotterill, Sports Editor, The Western Front Jamie Arthurs begins her junior year with the Western women's soccer team after having one of the greatest years of any goalkeeper in school history. As a sophomore in 2010, Arthurs tied a school record for most shutouts in a season with 11. Her 0.52 goals-against average was the second-best in school history and the best in the past 26 years. Her 11 shutouts were more than any other GNAC keeper. Her .886 save percentage -- that was at the top as well. As someone who makes saves look easy, hopefully Arthurs saves her best seasons for her final two. With a full year as Western's starting goalkeeper under her belt, Arthurs expects to be even better in 2011. "For me personally, having to be mentally prepared for each game is something I learned last year," Arthurs said. "I take every game as if it is the biggest game of the year. I hope to improve on that even more this year." Arthurs was named a second-team conference all-star last season. Seattle Pacific's Maddie Dickinson took the first team nod, even though Arthurs recorded more saves, more shutouts, had a higher save percentage and tied with her in goals allowed with 10 in 18 games. "I was completely happy with how I played for most of the season," Arthurs said. "Obviously you want to get that first-team slot, but that really wasn't even something I was working toward. I think playoffs is the big payoff at the end of the year. Hopefully we can make it this year." With Arthurs as well as 2010 first-team GNAC all-star Alicia Patten and senior Emily Warman at the defender positions, Western is likely to be one of the most stalwart defensive teams again this season. "When you have players in front of you like Alicia and Emily, they are going to make my job a lot easier," Arthurs said. "The less I have to touch the ball the better." With Dickinson gone from Seattle Pacific after finishing her four years of eligibility, Arthurs takes over as the conference's most imposing goalkeeper. |
