CHICO, Calif. - Forward Claire Morgan (Sr., Bellingham) scored the winning goal in the 106th minute as Western Washington University edged Chico State University, 2-1 in overtime, in a non-conference women's soccer game Thursday at University Soccer Stadium.

The contest, which was played in 97-degree heat, was the season opener for both teams.

"Getting a victory in our region against a quality opponent is really helpful," said Western coach Travis Connell. "But more than that, we learned a lot and got so much better over the 106 minutes of soccer. We are a much better soccer team than we were when we started, and that's what really excites me."

The Vikings, who were outshot 20-6, got the game winner on a diving header by Morgan on a cross by Megan Chapin (Jr., Seattle/Garfield), a transfer from Washington State.

Western took a 1-0 lead with 1:40 left in regulation as midfielder Joana Houplin (Jr., Olympia) took a thru ball from midfield by Morgan and deposited it in from 10 yards out.

With 46 seconds remaining, Chico State's Carly Singer tied the score at 1-1, finding the net with a free kick from 30 yards.

Western goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (So., Richland) made 10 saves for the Vikings, five in the first half when the Vikings were outshot 7-0.

"The heat really affected us in the first half," Connell said. "But we made adjustments in the second half and it was a much more even game from that point. Morgan, Alicia Patten (Jr., Seattle/Holy Names Academy) and Jamie (Arthurs) calmed us with their leadership and helped us get control of the game."

Chico State, the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association North Division champion, reached the second round of 2009 NCAA Division II National Tournament.

Western is at Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday (4:30 p.m.) before returning home for its home opener Monday (12 noon) against Humboldt State at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
