Early goal by Frankland gives Vikings 1-0 win over Sonoma State
Sept. 7, 2009
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Despite not having a shot advantage for the first time this season, Western Washington University picked up its first win in four tries, taking a 1-0 victory over Sonoma State University in a non-conference women's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus. The Vikings, who reached the NCAA Division II Far West Regional final last season, improved to 1-2-1. Sonoma State fell to 2-2-0. With the wind at its back, Western scored the game's only goal just 3:30 into the contest. A long goal kick by goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (R-Fr., Richland) was flicked on by forward Molly Shannon (Jr., Bellingham) to forward Emily Frankland (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline), who hit a low shot home from 15 yards out. It was the eighth goal of Frankland's three-year career and her fourth game winner. Sonoma State, which had a 15-10 shot advantage, had a number of good opportunities to tie. The final one came in the 86th minute when Taylor Colacion had a clean header from seven yards out off a corner kick, but the save was made by Arthurs, her fifth and final one of the contest. Western begins Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Friday (1 p.m.), entertaining Western Oregon.
