Western drops home and league opener 1-0 to Humboldt State
Sept. 11, 2003
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Katie Coppolette scored with just under 12 minutes left, giving Humboldt State University a 1-0 victory over Western Washington University on Thursday in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools.
The loss was the third straight for the Vikings, who slipped to 1-5-0 overall. The Lumberjacks improved to 3-2-0 overall.
The best scoring opportunities in the game all came in a five-minute flurry during the second half. In the 73rd minute, Humboldt State broke away on a 2-on-1, but Jenna Hunter fired just wide from eight yards. Western, which had a 16-12 edge in shots, responded three minutes later, when midfielder Jessica Sabado (Issaquah) controlled a long pass, spun and fired over the crossbar from 12 yards out.
A little over a minute later, the Lumberjacks found the net, as defender Kary Hood won a scramble in front of goal for the ball off a long throw-in, then fed a short pass to Coppolette, who scored from 10 yards out at 78:05.
Goalkeeper Staci Self had six saves in earning the shutout for Humboldt State. Goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Fr., Snohomish/Monroe) had six saves for Western.
The Vikings play the second of four consecutive home games Saturday (1 p.m.) when they meet Western Oregon in a GNAC contest at Civic Stadium.
