CHICO, Calif. -
Western Washington University gave up two early goals as it fell 2-1 to Chico State in a non-conference women's soccer contest Wednesday night at University Soccer Field.
The Wildcats, who improved to 4-2-0, scored twice in the first 13 minutes. Alison Sward had an unassisted goal in the eighth minute and Malissa Lindsay found the net on an assist by Kelsey Ikemoto in the 13th minute.
Western, which fell to 3-2-0, cut the deficit to one in the 17th minute when Claire Morgan (So., Bellingham) scored on a free kick.
The Vikings had an 8-1 shot advantage in the second half, Morgan having one opportunity go right across the goal mouth.
Western finished with a 12-7 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
"We were unprepared at the start and it cost us," said Western head coach Travis Connell. "We had a lot of chances in the second half."
The Vikings next play host to Dixie State University UT on Saturday (7 p.m.) at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
