Western battles in 2-1 loss at No.5 Seattle Pacific
Sept. 16, 2004
SEATTLE, Wash. - Jessica Henson scored off a rebound in the 55th minute, lifting nationally ranked Seattle Pacific University to a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Monday at Interbay Stadium.
The Vikings, who fell to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the league, nearly tied the game with five minutes left, Chela Gray (Kaneohe, HI/Iolani) getting free in the box, but her shot was wide.
Seattle Pacific, ranked No.5 in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America/NCAA Division II Poll, improved to 6-0-0, the best start in school history. It was the league opener for the defending GNAC champion Falcons, who extended their home field winning streak to 19.
"It wasn't a win, but they played great," said Western coach Travis Connell. "You could see all the emotion in their play. I was really proud of them."
Seattle Pacific opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Sarah Melby headed in a corner kick from Michelle Everson.
Four minutes later, Gray tied the game at 1-1. Western's Lindsey Cox (Jr., Redmond) served a looping pass, and Anna Smits (Fr., Lynden) challenged the goalkeeper, the ball dropping down to Gray, who found the net from 10 yards out.
Henson scored the game winner, tapping in a rebound after a cross from Michelle Sanders.
"Chela (Gray) had another great game," Connell said. "She's really on a roll. If she can do it against this team, she can do it against any team."
Connell also praised the play of all-star sweeper Amy Bouska (Sr., Des Moines/Mount Rainier).
Western goalkeeper Teresa Fish (So., Snohomish/Monroe) made four saves as did the Falcon's Jennifer Hull, who has allowed just two goals this season.
Seattle Pacific was 11-0-1 in conference play last year, the lone blemish being a 0-0 tie with Western at Bellingham. The Falcons have not lost to a GNAC foe in 21 games, dating back to Sept. 25, 2002.
Western hosts Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday (2 p.m.) in a GNAC contest at the Blaine Pipeline Complex.
