SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University suffered a heart-breaking loss as Kaylie Winston scored with 15 seconds remaining to give Seattle Pacific University a 2-1 victory in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Wednesday at Interbay Stadium.

The setback snapped a five-game winning streak for the Vikings, who fell to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play.

SPU, who tied the score in the 81st minute, improved to 5-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in GNAC action. The Falcons have won the last three league titles, eight of the last 10, and are working on a string of nine consecutive NCAA Division II West Region playoff appearances.

"It was a very even game and either team could have won," said WWU coach Travis Connell (10th year, 107-57-19) . ""Today, unfortunately, they made the plays at the end of the game. At the same time, I can't fault our effort. We played hard, the girls did exactly what I asked them to. So you feel bad about losing but not with our performance."

"You have to give the other team credit too. They made the plays at the end of the game. They needed them badly and they got'em. So we just have to learn from it and use it as motivation for the next time we play them."

WWU broke a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute as defender Brianna Jones (So., Bonney Lake) found the net. Joana Houplin (Sr., Olympia) served a free kick, which was headed by Katherine Miccile (So., Kent/Kentlake). Jones was nearly on the goal line when she punched it in.

Nine minutes later, SPU's Shayla Page knotted the score at 1-1, heading in a corner kick off the foot of Alexa Diaz.

Winston scored the game winner on a five-yard blast. Brittany Langdon and Laura Moore were credited with assists for the Falcons.

SPU finished with a 13-8 shot advantage, though trailing 6-4 at halftime. The Falcons also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. It was the Vikings fourth straight loss in the series, following a five-game non-losing streak (3-0-2).

WWU returns home Sunday (6 p.m.) to host Simon Fraser University at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus. The Vikings are 9-1-4 in their last 14 home matches with eight straight shutouts and 12 overall during that span.
