Gagne's goal in 71st minute gives Western victory in GNAC opener
Sept. 22, 2005
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Freshman midfielder Kelly Gagne (Kent/Kentwood) scored in the 71st minute, lifting Western Washington University to a 2-1 victory over Humboldt State University in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools Thursday at the Whatcom CC Soccer Field.
The Vikings improved to 4-2-0 overall, and Humboldt State fell to 4-5-0.
Gagne scored after Rosie Zadra (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) put in a cross from the right that was deflected on by Erin Casey (Sr., Redmond). Gagne collected the ball from seven yards out and calmly put a shot over Humboldt State goalkeeper Staci Self.
The Vikings then survived a late Lumberjack flurry. In the 86th minute, Western defender Meghan Woodman (Fr., Redmond) cleared a ball off the goal line and goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Jr., Snohomish/Monroe) was forced to make a diving save off a shot by Humboldt State midfielder Libby Kimmett.
"It was a great win," said Western coach Travis Connell. "It was our first conference game and Humboldt has always been tough for us. We played some good stretches, but we need to be more consistent.
"We did some things successfully on offense that we've been working on, but we need to do that more often."
The Lumberjacks' equalizer in the 59th minute came when Katie Coppoletta drove into the left edge of the penalty area and finished with a high shot from 20 yards that found the upper right-hand corner of the net. The Vikings had a 9-7 edge in shots, but Humboldt State had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Western hosts Western Oregon University in a GNAC counter Saturday (1 p.m.) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
