BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Midfielder Amanda Font (Sr., Federal Way/Decatur) scored her third game-winning goal of the season, this one in the 88th minute, as Western Washington University blanked Grand Canyon University, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who had won just one of their last four contests (1-2-1), improved to 6-2-1. They are 5-1-1 at home.
GCU, which has scored just two goals this season, was blanked for the eighth time in falling to 1-7-1.
It was the 25th career shutout for Western goalkeeper Teresa Fish (Sr., Monroe/Snohomish), extending her school record and tying the Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark. She made four saves in notching her fifth shutout of the season.
The game's only goal came at 87:02 on a corner kick by Kelly Irving (So., Gig Harbor). She miss hit the ball, sending it on the ground through a number of Grand Canyon defenders. It rolled to the Vikings' Emily Frankland (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline), who tried to knock it in, but instead ricocheted it to Font, who put the ball softly by the goaltender from six yards out.
All three of Font's goals this season have been game winners. It is the eighth game-winning goal of her four-year career, nearly half of her 17 total goals.
GCU goalkeeper Ruth Nsubuga, making just her second appearance in net for the Antelopes, had seven saves.
Western had a huge 26-9 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Vikings return to GNAC action Friday (3 p.m.), traveling to Western Oregon (0-7-2, 0-4-0).
