BILLINGS, Mont. -- Freshman forward Talia Daigle scored in the 78th minute to lift the No. 1-ranked Western Washington University to a 1-0 victory over Montana State Billings Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Yellowjacket Field.
Daigle's (Edmonds, WA/Archbishop Murphy) third goal of the season kept the Vikings perfect at 9-0-0 on the season and remain atop the GNAC standings at 5-0-0 for 15 points. Seven of WWU's nine wins this season have come on the road.
The Vikings also extended their winning streak to 33 consecutive games, remaining the 4th-longest streak in NCAA Division II history, and ran their unbeaten streak to 34 straight (33-0-1) to move into a tie for 5th place in the NCAA II record books.
The Vikings out-shot MSUB 29-3 in the contest, including a 13-0 edge in shots on goal.
"We did a great job controlling the game and creating a lot of chances," said 15th-year head coach Travis Connell. "I would have liked us to be more efficient in front of the net, but there are always things to work on. Goal scoring is the toughest thing to do in soccer -- it takes sharpness and execution. But you only need one when you hold the other team to zero, so we'll take it."
WWU dominated the first half with a 16-1 advantage in shots, and 6-0 in shots on goal that were saved by MSUB goalkeeper Erinn Harder to keep the game scoreless. The Vikings had a pair of close calls, with junior forward Gabriela Pelogi (11') and senior midfielder Emily Webster (29') both hitting the crossbar on shots in the first half.
The Vikings kept the pressure on throughout the early part of the second half, and finally broke through in the 78th minute when Daigle netted the eventual game-winner for her 3rd goal of the season. Daigle took a one-touch pass from sophomore Peyton Chick (Renton, WA/Kentridge), who made a run through the defense into the box, and beat the keeper 1-on-1 with a low shot to the far corner of the net.
Senior defender Sierra Shugarts (Federal Way, WA/Decatur), the 2016 NCAA II National Player of the Year, played all 90 minutes for the first time this season after working her way back from injury. She teamed with fellow center back Annaliese Laurila (Portland, OR/Grant) and junior defender Taylor Hallquist (Vancouver, WA/Columbia River) to limit the Yellowjackets to just three shots in the Vikings sixth shutout of the season.
"I thought Taylor Hallquist had an excellent match today, both rock solid on defense and really contributed on the attack," added Connell on his junior defender."
WWU senior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA) was credited with her fifth shutout of the season, despite not making a save. Homer has now logged 589:27 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
Harder made 12 saves for MSUB, who dropped to 1-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in GNAC play.
The Vikings return to action next Thursday as part of a WWU-Seattle Pacific doubleheader at Harrington Field. The women's team hosts the Falcons at 5 pm, and the men follow at 7:30 pm.
