Western snaps two-game losing streak with 2-0 win at Grand Canyon
Oct. 12, 2009
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Midfielder Kelly Irving (Sr., Gig Harbor) and forward Claire Morgan (Jr., Bellingham) scored second-half goals from 22 and 32 yards, respectively, as Western Washington University blanked Grand Canyon University, 2-0, in a non-league women's soccer contest Monday at GCU field. The Vikings, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 7-4-2. Grand Canyon fell to 5-6-2. "We played a quality match," said Western coach Travis Connell. "It's a difficult environment here, much hotter than we're used to, but the players stayed really focused and played really good defense." "The goals we scored were two of our best this year. The goalkeeper didn't even move on the free kick by Morgan. Both were really struck well." Irving scored in the 51st minute, striking the ball off a rebound into the left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. Morgan's goal in the 77th minute came off a free kick that went over the wall of defenders and over the goalkeeper's head. It was the second goal in three games for Morgan, who had not scored in Western's first 10 contests after being one of the team's top two scorers in each of her first two seasons. The Vikings were outshot, 13-10, but goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) made four saves for Western in notching her fifth shutout of the year and the 13th during her three-year career. Connell also praised the play of defender Brynn Regan (Sr., Mercer Island). "Brynn was fantastic today with good energy and leadership back there," Connell said. It was the fourth straight win for the Vikings over Grand Canyon. They now hold a 6-2-0 series advantage. Western returns to Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Wednesday (3 p.m.), traveling to Central Washington.
