ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Forwards Molly Shannon (Jr., Bellingham) and Emily Frankland (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline) scored second-half goals as Western Washington University blanked Central Washington University, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Wednesday at the CWU Soccer Field.

The Vikings won their second consecutive game following a pair of losses, improving to 8-4-2 overall and stayed atop the GNAC standings at 5-1-1.

Central dropped to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play. It was the seventh time that the Wildcats have been shut out this season.

"We overcame a lot in this match," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We had two starting center midfielders get hurt in the first 10 minutes and not return, so we had people playing out of position. And we had just gotten back from Phoenix then ridden a bus over here, so we didn't have a great first half.

"But we turned it around in the second half, showed a lot of character, took control of the game and scored two good goals."

Shannon scored Western's first goal in the 53rd minute off a corner kick. Kelly Irving (Sr., Gig Harbor) served it to Lucy Miller (Sr., Pacific Palisades, CA), who passed it to the far post where Shannon tapped it in.

It was Shannon's fourth goal of the season and Irving's league-leading sixth assist. Frankland's goal, her team-leading sixth of the campaign, came in the 69th minute.

Justina MacDowell (So., Bellevue/Sammamish) beat a defender at midfield and played a through ball down the left side behind the defense to Frankland, who slotted it on the ground from 12 yards past the goalkeeper.

It was the second straight shutout for Western, which blanked Grand Canyon, 2-0, in a non-league contest Monday.

Goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) made three saves for the Vikings. It was her sixth shutout of the year and the 14th of her three-year career.

"We're defending so much better these last two games," Connell said. "We're so much more organized defensively, and that's really helped us."

Western, which had a 15-14 edge in shots, is at Western Oregon on Sunday (1 p.m.) for a GNAC counter.
