Western blanks Grand Canyon, 2-0
Oct. 25, 2004
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Freshman forward Anna Smits (Lynden) assisted on both goals as Western Washington University blanked Grand Canyon University, 2-0, in a college women's soccer game Monday at Mount Vernon High School.
It was the third straight win for the Vikings, who improved to 10-6-1. They had a 23-5 shot advantage and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Grand Canyon dropped to 4-12-1.
"We still need to improve our attack," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We're going to play teams that are better than this, and if we want to beat them, we need to execute better in the final third (of the field). We're getting opportunites, but just not finishing."
Western forward Chela Gray (Jr., Kaneohe, HI/Iolani) opened the scoring in the 38th minute, connecting from three yards out after a shot by Smits bounced off the Antelope goalkeeper. Lizzy Page (Jr., Sammamish/Eastlake) started the play with a nice feed to Smits.
It was Gray's team-leading seventh goal of the season, and her second in as many games.
The Vikings' second goal, termed the "prettiest of the season" by Connell, came in the 57th minute, Smits serving a cross from the right sideline to Katie Weber (So., Yakima/Eisenhower), who punched it in from seven yards.
Goalkeeper Teresa Fish (So., Snhomish/Monroe) made two saves as Western posted its seventh shutout of the season.
"We're defending really well right now," Connell said. "I'm really happy to get the shutout."
Western hosts Western Oregon University (5-10-1) on Saturday (12 noon) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.
