Western takes over GNAC lead by one point with 3-0 win over Montana State Billings
Oct. 24, 2009 BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University took over first place in the league standings by the slim margin of one point as it blanked Montana State University Billings, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College. The Vikings improved to 10-4-2 overall and are 7-1-1 in GNAC action. Seattle Pacific is second at 7-1-0. Western, which is working on a season-best four-game winning streak, all of them shutouts, plays the nationally No.4-ranked Falcons on Wednesday (7 p.m.) at Seattle's Interbay Stadium. MSUB dropped to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league play. "We had lots of energy to start the game and got the other team on its heels," said Western coach Travis Connell. "That's a great recipe for victory to be able to play in the other team's half." "We've got a big contest coming up and we're in game form." Western midfielder Kelly Irving (Sr., Gig Harbor) opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a free kick from 24 yards. The Vikings then extended the lead with two goals in a span of 2:30 late in the first half. In the 42nd minute, a sliding finish by Justina MacDowell (So., Bellevue/Sammamish) of a low cross by Lucy Miller (Sr., Pacific Palisades, CA) made the score 2-0. Then in the 44th minute, Joana Houplin (Fr., Olympia) got Western's third goal, finishing from eight yards to cap a slick passing combination that also involved Kasey Hostetler (Sr., Richland/Hanford) and Claire Morgan (Jr., Bellingham). Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) made five saves in registering her eighth shutout, matching her total of last season, and the 16th of her career. The Vikings took a 3-2 win in their first meeting with Seattle Pacific, then ranked No.1 nationally, at Bellingham on Oct. 3.
