LACEY, Wash. - Forward Kristin Maris (So., Issaquah) scored both goals and head coach Travis Connell recorded his 100th victory as Western Washington University shut out Saint Martin's University, 2-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest Thursday at SMU Field.

It was the second straight win for the Vikings, who extended their unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1). They improved to 8-5-3 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play.

Saint Martin's fell to 3-11-2 overall and 3-9-0 in GNAC action. The Saints entered the game having won three of their last seven games following a 0-6-2 start.

"It was a good team win," said Connell (9th year, 100-55-19). "We were a little short-handed today, but we got contributions from a lot of players."

Maris enjoyed the first multi-goal day of her collegiate career, scoring in the 30th minute and again in the 69th minute.

"Brianna Jones (Fr., Bonney Lake) served a fantastic ball from 40 yards and Kristin ran onto it and volleyed the ball in from 15 yards out," said Connell in describing WWU's first goal.

"Her second goal came on a corner kick with Joana Houplin (Jr., Olympia) playing a perfect ball to the far post and Maris rising above everyone else and heading it in."

The two goals gave Maris three this fall. The assists were the third this season for both Jones and Houplin.

The Vikings were without leading scorer Emily Frankland (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline), who missed a third straight game with a knee injury. Out with a muscle pull was forward Taylor Abrass (Fr., Mercer Island).

Connell praised the play of forward Anna Geldenhuys (So., Bellevue/Sammamish) and midfielder Kelly Cates (Sr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap).

WWU posted a 13-2 shot advantage and had all five corner kicks.

The Vikings are at home to face Western Oregon on Saturday (1 p.m.) for a GNAC counter at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
