BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Claire Morgan (Sr., Bellingham) scored two goals and took over sole possession of the school's career assist record as Western Washington University defeated Northwest Nazarene University, 5-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
Joana Houplin (Jr., Olympia) had a goal and assist for the Vikings, who snapped a two-game losing streak as they improved to 10-4-3 overall and 7-4-2 in GNAC play.
Northwest Nazarene fell to 5-12-0 overall and 3-10-0 in conference action.
"Things started to click offensively in the second half," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Claire had a big contribution from the midfield."
Morgan scored the game's first goal with eight minutes to go in the first half, stealing the ball at midfield and rocketing in a shot from 20 yards.
Four minutes into the second half, Molly Shannon (Sr., Bellingham) made it 2-0, scoring off a volley from Morgan, who became the Vikings' sole leader in career assists with 27, snapping a three-way tie.
Late in the game, Western scored three goals in a span of just over 10 minutes. Justina MacDowell (Jr., Bellevue/Sammamish) tapped in a cross from Houplin in the 79th minute, Morgan scored from 16 yards in the 82nd minute, Anna Geldenhuys (Fr., Bellevue/Sammamish) being credited with an assist; and Alicia Patten (Jr., Seattle/Holy Names Academy) slotted a through ball to Houplin, who ran the field and beat the keeper with a minute to go.
Western goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs (So., Richland) picked up her GNAC-leading 10th shutout of the season, making four saves.
Morgan has eight goals and eight assists this season, leading the team in both categories. Her 25 career goals rank 10th among Viking leaders.
Shannon is second in goals with six and her career total is 23.
Western, which had a 21-10 shot advantage, closes out its season Saturday, Nov. 6, entertaining Simon Fraser University.
