BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Kristin Maris (Sr., Issaquah) scored twice and Ashton Griffen (Sr., Duvall/Cedarcrest) and Kim Cooper (Jr., Bellingham) each had two assists as nationally ranked and playoff-bound Western Washington University ended its regular season with a 5-0 Senior Night victory over Simon Fraser University on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings, ranked No.11 nationally in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 16-1-0 overall and 13-1-0 in GNAC action, having already clinched the regular-season title. They open play in the GNAC tournament with a semifinal contest Thursday (7 p.m.) against Western Oregon at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

SFU fell to 1-13-2 overall and 1-11-2 in GNAC play. The Clan lost 7-0 to WWU on Oct. 10 at Burnaby, B.C.

Delanee Nilles (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) opened the scoring in the ninth minute, heading home a Griffen corner kick.

Less than two minutes later, Maris scored on a header of her own, finishing off a very unique cross. Brina Sych (Sr., Vancouver/Union) lost a shoe as she moved around a defender, but still played the ball in for Maris with the sock on her right foot.

Catherine Miles (So., Anacortes) scored her GNAC-leading 13th goal of the season in the 27thminute, tapping in a low cross by Jessica Bertucci (So., Bellingham/Sehome) after a Cooper through ball.

Maris then completed the first half barrage in the 37th minute by tapping in a Griffen corner kick flicked on by Cooper to give the Vikings a 4-0 halftime lead.

Griffen now has 10 assists on the season, just two short of the school record of 12 set by Hope Grimm in 1984.

Erin Russell (Fr., Brier/Mountlake Terrace) completed the scoring in the 57th minute, tapping in her own rebound.

"It was a good way to celebrate Senior Night, we created a lot of opportunities in the first half," said WWU coach Travis Connell (11th year, 137-60-19). "It gives us momentum as we head into the conference tournament."

Saturday's contest was the final regular-season home game for seven WWU seniors. - Maris, Griffen, Sych, goalkeeper Alyssa Beauchamp (Vancouver/Mountain View), forward Anna Geldenhuys (Bellevue/Sammamish), defender Diana Pollock (Bellevue/Eastlake), and defender Kayla Russ (Puyallup/Bellarmine Prep).

The Vikings had a 20-3 advantage in shot attempts and did not allow a shot on target in notching their 11th shutout of the season.

WWU is unbeaten in its last 10 meetings (8-0-2) with Simon Fraser and has not given up a goal in the last nine of those contests.

WWU enters the GNAC Tournament as the No.1 seed and defending champion. The championship game is Saturday, Nov. 9 (1 p.m.).
