BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Kelly Irving (Jr., Gig Harbor) scored in the 70th minute, helping Western Washington University defeat Cal State L.A., 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer contest Monday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.

The Vikings, ranked No.18 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll and first in the Far West Region ratings, improved to 15-2-1.

Western extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games (12-0-1), the longest since the Vikings won a school-record 38 straight contests from 1982 to 1984.

Western has outscored its opponents 29-8 during the run.

CSULA slipped to 7-9-3.

Irving's goal was her fifth of the season and her fourth in the last six games.

Irving exchanged passes with forward Emily Frankland (So., Sammamish/Skyline) to get to the edge of the penalty area, then fired a shot home from 12 yards out on the right side.

"It was a great goal by Irving," said Western coach Travis Connell. "She battled off two defenders to get the shot off. She's really come on for us the second half of the season."

The Golden Eagles nearly evened the score, twice forcing Western goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark) into tough saves. In the 73rd minute, Broadbent made a diving save after Sarah Califf deflected a corner kick toward goal. Then in the 85th minute, Broadbent tipped a Califf shot over the crossbar just seconds after Liz Franco had hit the post.

"Kylie made some great saves again," Connell said. "That's almost become commonplace, she's been keeping us in games."

It was the seventh shutout of the season for Broadbent, who has a 0.71 goals against average.

Western had a 20-13 advantage in shots.

The Vikings close out their regular season with two Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest, entertaining Saint Martin's on Thursday (4 p.m.) and Western Oregon on Saturday (1 p.m.).
