The Vikings won the NCAA Division II National Championship with an undefeated 24-0-1 record…beat three-time defending champion Grand Valley State 3-2 in the national championship game Dec. 3 in Kansas City, MO at Swope Soccer Village…opened the season with a 0-0 tie at Sonoma State, then recorded a GNAC record with a 24-game winning streak en route to the school’s 10th national championship…advanced to the program’s third Final Four over the last four seasons…won third West Region Championship with a 2-1 overtime victory over UC San Diego on a golden goal by Gabriela Pelogi (played in Golden, CO)…won record fifth consecutive GNAC regular-season championship with a perfect 12-0-0 record and won third GNAC Tournament title…advanced to fifth consecutive NCAA II Tournament, posting a 100-9-7 record (.892) over this stretch, the second-best mark in Division II behind GVSU (112-7-8/.913)…finished the season ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA poll…earned first No. 1 ranking in program history on Oct. 11 and remained the top team in the nation the rest of the season…head coach Travis Connell recorded his 200th career victory in the NCAA quarterfinal win over Colorado Mines and led the NSCAA Staff of the Year…beat nationally-ranked Bridgeport 5-1 on Sept. 22 at Harrington Field in a game broadcast nationally on WatchESPN/ESPN3…set GNAC record with 25 consecutive home wins.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING…led the GNAC in nearly every statistical category…set school record and tied GNAC record with 17 shutouts (T3rd in NCAA II)…had the 5th-lowest goals against average in NCAA II 0.396…allowed only 10 goals in 25 games…led the NCAA in winning percentage (.980)…averaged a school-record 2.64 goals per game, 15th-best in NCAA II.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR…junior defender Sierra Shugarts had one of the most decorated seasons in WWU Athletics history earning GNAC and NSCAA Player of the Year honors…was the second defender to earn NSCAA Player of the Year honors…named a finalist for the Seattle Sports Female Star of the Year…women’s soccer nominee for the 2017 DII Honda Athlete of the Year.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP…junior Emily Webster scored on a free kick in the in the 76th minute for the game winner, and senior Caitlyn Jobanek recorded a pair of goals to lead the Vikings to a 3-2 win over Grand Valley State to win the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship on Dec. 3 in Kansas City…the Vikings beat Kutztown 3-0 in the national semifinal, setting an NCAA Championship record with 21 corner kicks and not allowing a shot.
