BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Eight home matches and trips to Arizona and Southern California highlight the Western Washington University 2003 women's soccer schedule.
The Vikings open their season at the Grand Canyon Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. There they face defending Midwest Region champion and 2002 NCAA Division II national semifinalist Metro State on Aug. 31 and host Grand Canyon on Sept. 1.
Western then travels to Carson, Calif., for a match against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 3 at the recently completed Home Depot Center complex before closing out the road trip at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament on Sept. 5 and 7, facing host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Bakersfield.
Western returns home for four straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests at Bellingham's Civic Stadium, entertaining Humboldt State on Sept. 11, Western Oregon on Sept. 13, defending league champion Seattle Pacific on Sept. 18 and Central Washington on Sept. 21. The Vikings other two conference home games are against Seattle U. on Oct. 15 and Northwest Nazarene on Nov. 8.
Western also hosts two non-conference home contests, meeting Evergreen State on Oct. 4 and Simon Fraser on Nov. 1, and plays another at a neutral site, meeting Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 29 at the Simon Fraser campus in Burnaby, B.C.
Completing the Vikings' schedule are six conference road games at Seattle U. on Sept. 24, Northwest Nazarene on Sept. 27, Seattle Pacific on Oct. 9, Central Washington on Oct. 19, Western Oregon on Oct. 24 and Humboldt State on Oct. 26.
First-year women's head coach Travis Connell has six starters and 16 letter winners back from last season's 10-8-1 squad that finished third in the GNAC at 8-4-0.
