BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University midfielder Ashton Griffen has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 1-7.

Griffen, a senior from Duvall (graduate of Cedarcrest High School), played 90 minutes of solid defense as the Vikings opened their season with a 1-0 upset victory at nationally No.3-ranked UC San Diego.

"It looked like there were two of her out there," commented WWU head coach Travis Connell.

The Vikings are home for two non-conference games this week, entertaining Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday, Sept. 12 (12 noon) and Dixie State on Saturday, Sept. 14 (4 p.m.) at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.
