BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Western Washington University junior forward Gabriela Pelogi has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the second time during the 2017 season, announced Monday by the conference office.
Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) helped guide top-ranked and defending national champion WWU to a pair of GNAC wins last week, totaling 2 goals and an assist over 2 games. She recorded an assist during a 4-0 win against visiting Simon Fraser last Thursday before scoring twice in a 6-1 victory at Saint Martin's last Saturday.
Her assist helped the Vikings to record their first goal against the Clan on Thursday in the 29th minute. Against the Saints, Pelogi put the Vikings ahead with a goal in the 26th minute and added a second goal with 3 seconds to go before halftime, scoring in the 45th minute to post her second multi-goal effort of the season.
Pelogi leads the conference in points (20) and goals (8) while recording at least 1 goal or assist in 6 of 7 games this season. She also ranks 2nd among conference leaders in game-winning goals (3) and is tied for 2nd in assists (4). For her career, Pelogi has scored 29 goals and totaled 74 points to rank 9th in program history in both categories.
Among national NCAA II leaders, Pelogi ranks tied for 4th in total points and points per game (2.86), tied for 5th in goals, tied for 6th in game-winning goals, tied for 7th in goals per game (1.14), tied for 23rd in total assists and tied for 24th in assists per game (.57).
Previously named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5, the weekly award is the second of the season for Pelogi and fourth of her career.
WWU has been honored with at least one GNAC weekly award each week during the 2017 season. Pelogi (offense) and sophomore defender Annaliese Laurila (Portland, OR/Grant) swept the awards for Aug. 28-Sept. 3 before senior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA) earned defensive honors for Sept. 4-10. Junior forward Karli White (North Bend, WA/Mount Si/Seattle U.) was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week last week.
The Vikings are ranked No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches DII poll and are undefeated at 7-0-0 (3-0-0 GNAC) this season. WWU carries a 31-game winning streak (4th-longest in NCAA II history) and 32-game undefeated streak (tied for 7th-longest in NCAA II history) into this week's upcoming GNAC games.
WWU travels to Central Washington to face the Wildcats on Thursday at 3 pm PT before heading to Montana State Billings for a game on Saturday at 12 pm MT/11 am PT.
