Taylor Hallquist Named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week

Oct. 2, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior defender Taylor Hallquist has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.

Hallquist (Vancouver, WA/Columbia River) played every minute of both games last week as No.1-ranked and defending national champion WWU earned a pair of shutout wins on the road at Central Washington (2-0) and Montana State Billings (1-0).

Her efforts with the WWU defense limited Central Washington to 4 total shots and 2 shots on goal last Thursday before holding Montana State Billings to 3 total shots (none on goal) last Saturday as the Vikings recorded their 5th and 6th shutouts of the year. Hallquist also put 2 shots on goal against Central Washington and contributed offensively at Montana State Billings.

“I thought Taylor Hallquist had an excellent match today, both rock solid on defense and really contributed on the attack,” said head coach Travis Connell following the victory at Montana State Billings.

The WWU defense has posted a shutout in six of its last seven games with Hallquist as a defensive starter for each game. She played the full 90 minutes of each game last week as one of two Vikings, along with senior goalkeeper Ashley Homer (Puyallup, WA/College of Saint Rose), to play the full duration of both contests last week.

The WWU defense is tied for 6th nationally with a .333 goals-against average and also ranks in a tie for 14th with a .667 shutout percentage.

Hallquist earned a GNAC weekly honor for the first time in her career, joining Homer and sophomore Annaliese Laurila (Portland, OR/Grant) as WWU recipients of the GNAC Defensive Player of the Week honor during the 2017 season.

WWU has been honored with at least one GNAC weekly award each week during the 2017 season. Junior forward Gabriela Pelogi (Federal Way, WA) earned offensive honors and Laurila defensive honors for Aug. 28-Sept. 3 before Homer earned defensive honors for Sept. 4-10. Junior forward Karli White (North Bend, WA/Mount Si/Seattle U.) was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 11-17 before Pelogi earned the same honor the following week for Sept.18-24.

The Vikings are ranked No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches DII poll and are undefeated at 9-0-0 (5-0-0 GNAC) in 2017. WWU carries a 33-game winning streak (4th-longest in NCAA II history) and 34-game undefeated streak (tied for 5th-longest in NCAA II history) into the week.

WWU has one game this week, hosting Seattle Pacific on Thursday night at 5 pm as part of a doubleheader at Harrington Field. Following the game at 5 pm, the WWU men’s soccer team will face Seattle Pacific with a 7:30 pm start time. A 2-for-1 ticket admission deal to watch both games will be offered and free t-shirts will be given away.

Following Thursday, the Vikings remain at home to host Saint Martin’s next Tuesday (7 pm, Oct. 10) before traveling to Simon Fraser next Thursday (5 pm, Oct. 12).
