Gabriela Pelogi Featured in Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd

Oct. 6, 2017

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University women’s soccer player Gabriela Pelogi is featured in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of the current edition of Sports Illustrated.
Pelogi, a junior forward from Federal Way, Wash., is one of six athletes appearing in the well-known Faces in the Crowd section of the Oct. 9 edition of Sports Illustrated. It runs on page 21 of the popular sports magazine, now available on newsstands and to subscribers across the country.
The write-up on Pelogi highlights her first career hat trick recorded in WWU’s second game of the season at Holy Names, and details her sophomore season where she led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 29 points while leading the Vikings to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Pelogi is off to a torrid start in her junior season with 10 goals and 24 points (4 assists) through the first 10 games. She ranks 8th in program history in goals scored (31) and points (78) while appearing in 58 career games.
The defending national champion Vikings are 10-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in GNAC play, and have won 34 consecutive games, currently the 4th-longest winning streak in NCAA II history.
Pelogi is believed to be the sixth WWU student-athlete to be featured in Faces in the Crowd, and the second soccer player. Annettte Duvall, the most prolific scorer in WWU women’s soccer history with 62 goals and 143 points, was featured in the Dec. 12, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Three WWU rowers have been featured in Faces in the Crowd during the Vikings run of seven consecutive national championships from 2005-2011 (now have 8 national championships), with Lindsay Mann-King (6/25/07), Audrey Coon (8/18/08) and Samantha Oberholzer (6/20/11) all gracing the pages of SI. Bill Wright was the first WWU student-athlete to appear in Faces in the Crowd on July 27, 1959, after he became the first African American to win the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.
