BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Forward Kristin Maris (Jr., Issaquah) and defender Brina Sych (Jr., Vancouver/Union) were both honored for the second straight year, heading four members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team named to the 2012 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic all-star team.

The quartet also included midfielder Ashton Griffen (Jr., Duvall/Cedarcrest) and defender Diana Pollock (Jr., Bellevue/Eastlake).

Maris, who is majoring in biology, has a 3.85 GPA. Sych is a kinesiology major with a 3.37 GPA.

Maris leads WWU with seven goals, three of them game winners, and 18 points. Sych has five goals and five assists for 15 points as well as being a key figure on a defense that leads the nation with a 0.25 goals against average.

Griffen, who is a physical education major, has a 3.85 (4.0 scale) grade point average. Pollock is a public relations major with a 3.54 GPA.

Griffen has one goal and four assists.

WWU has won its last nine games, all shutouts, and is 14-2-0 overall and leads the GNAC standings at 11-1-0.

The post-season bound Vikings end their regular season this week with two home games, entertaining Central Washington on Thursday (1 p.m.), Oct. 25, and Seattle Pacific on Saturday (7 p.m.), Oct. 27.

To be eligible for the GNAC academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
