2013 GNAC Soccer Academic All-Stars
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -
Forward Kristin Maris (Sr., Issaquah) and defender Brina Sych (Sr., Vancouver/Union) were each honored for the third time, leading seven members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team named as 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Stars in an announcement made Wednesday, Oct. 30, by the conference office.
Receiving the accolade for the second time were Viking midfielder Ashton Griffen (Sr., Duvall/Cedarcrest) and defender Diana Pollock (Sr., Bellevue/Eastlake).
Rounding out the WWU honorees were midfielder Kim Cooper (Jr., Bellingham), forward Catherine Miles (So., Anacortes) and midfielder Delanee Nilles (So., Poulsbo/North Kitsap).
Maris, a behavioral neuroscience major, is maintaining a 3.83 (4.0 scale) grade point average; and Sych, a kinesiology major, has 3.42 GPA.
Maris has seven goals and is tied with Griffen, a physical education major with a 3.90 GPA, for the conference lead in assists with six. Sych has four assists and has helped the Vikings to a 0.33 goals against average.
Miles, who has a 3.84 GPA, ranks 18th nationally and leads the GNAC in goals with 12. She is tied for the conference lead in game-winning goals with four.
Pollock is a journalism-public relations major with a 3.52 GPA, Cooper is a recreation major with a 3.50 GPA and Nilles, who has three goals and two assists, has a 3.52 GPA.
WWU, ranked No.11 nationally, is 14-1-0 overall and atop the GNAC standings at 11-1-0.
The Vikings have two GNAC counters this week, traveling to Central Washington on Thursday, Oct. 31 (3 p.m.), and entertaining Simon Fraser on Saturday, Nov. 2 (7 p.m.).
To be eligible for the GNAC academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
