Four Vikings named GNAC academic all-stars

2011 GNAC Soccer Academic All-Stars BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Midfielder Kelly Cates (Sr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) was honored for the second straight year, heading four members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team named to the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic all-star team released today. The quartet also included forward Kristin Maris (So., Issaquah), midfielder Brina Sych (So., Vancouver/Union) and midfielder Megan Chapin (Sr., Seattle/Garfield). Cates, who is majoring in marine biology, has a 3.53 (4.0 scale) grade point average. She has scored one goal, a game winner, and been credited with one assist. Maris, who is a physical education major with a 3.78 GPA, has four goals, one a game winner, and one assist. Three of the goals have come in the last two games. Sych is a physical education major with a 3.33 GPA, and Chapin an anthropology-archaeology major with a 3.33 GPA. Sych has four goals, two of them game winners, and two assists; and Chapin has three goals and a team-leading four assists. WWU, 9-5-3, ends its season Friday (7 p.m.) at Simon Fraser. To be eligible for the GNAC academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university. |
