Three Vikings named second-team Daktronics West Region all-stars

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Three members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team were second-team picks on the 2009 Daktronics/NCAA Division II West Region All-Star Team announced today. They are senior midfielder Kelly Irving (Gig Harbor), sophomore defender Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) and senior defender Brynn Regan (Mercer Island). Three members of the Western Washington University women's soccer team were second-team picks on the 2009 Daktronics/NCAA Division II West Region All-Star Team announced today. They are senior midfielder Kelly Irving (Gig Harbor), sophomore defender Alicia Patten (Seattle/Holy Names Academy) and senior defender Brynn Regan (Mercer Island). Irving, who also was a second-team choice last year, had eight assists, tying a school career record that had stood for 25 years with a four-year total of 26. She also scored three goals, all game winners. Irving, Patten and Regan helped the Vikings rank second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in both goals against average at 1.05 per game and shutouts with nine. Western finished 11-4-4 overall, going unbeaten in its final seven games (5-0-2), and placed second in the GNAC at 8-1-3 despite a win and a tie in two meetings with league champion Seattle Pacific. 2009 Daktronics/NCAA Division II West Region Team High-scoring Cal State Los Angeles forward Liz Franco has been tabbed as the 2009 Daktronics/NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year as voted upon by West Region sports information directors. The CCAA's Most Valuable Offensive Player and first-team all-conference selection leads the CCAA in scoring with 43 points on 13 goals and 17 assists that includes six game-winning goals. Along with first-team all-Region teammates Amanda Matthews (midfielder), Alex Conley (forward) and Caroline Hanna (defender), CSULA won its first CCAA Championship and is 17-2-2. Franco scored four of CSULA's five goals in CCAA Championship Tournament including a hat trick and an assist in the championship game. That performance earned her the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive Player award. Completing the first team are goalie Kristin Armstrong (UCSD), midfielders Ali Sward (Chico State), Anne Wethe (UCSD) and Kelsey Jenkins (Seattle Pacific), forwards Jocelyn Charette (Seattle Pacific) and Jessica Murphy (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and defenders Lindsay Catton (Sonoma State), Taylor Sawyer (Seattle Pacific) and Paige Peele (Cal State Dominguez Hills).
